What to Wear to Your Engagement Session

Top tips for what to wear for your engagement photos

As wedding photographers, it's important to us that the images we deliver tell a story. When you look at your engagement photos ten, twenty, or even fifty years down the road, we want you to see yourselves in them. Ultimately, choosing what to wear for your engagement photos includes both selecting clothing and accessories that match your personal style AND selecting items that help you look and feel your best in front of the camera!

Top Tips for What to Wear for your Engagement Photos

Tip # 1: Dress it up!

You only get your engagement photos taken once, so pick something that makes you look and feel AMAZING. Think about an outfit you’ve dreamed of wearing, but never had the occasion for it…this is your chance! We love outfits inspired by the fashion world. Spend some time flipping through magazines or scrolling on Pinterest to get some outfit inspiration if you need it.

Tips for choosing outfit colors for your engagement photos

When choosing colors for your outfits, we recommend selecting lighter tones and more muted shades, unless there's a bold color that really fits your personality or makes your skin tone pop! Sometimes really bright or bold colors take attention away from your faces and we want the focus to be on YOU and the way you feel about each other! Bright colors can also cast color reflections on your face or your partner's face.

Using black as a neutral adds contrast to your photos, but can be overwhelming if incorporated into too many pieces of clothing.

Warning tip: Very small patterns or thin lines can create some strange color patterns on camera, so avoid those!

Tip # 3 for what to wear: Flatter your features

Dress to flatter your body type! A few slimming features we love for women: three-quarter length sleeves, heels with a closed toe that elongate the legs, and a flattering waistline! A few key tips for men: choose well-tailored pants and modern accessories like a belt, tie clip, pocket square or watch to keep him looking his best!

Tip # 4 for what to wear: Incorporate layers into your outfits, especially during the colder months

Wearing multiple layers gives depth to your outfits. It makes it easy to change the whole look of your session by simply adding or removing a suit coat, vest (for guys), or stylish jacket.  It also gives you some natural props to work with during your session.

Tip # 5 for what to wear: Consider multiple looks

We usually recommend that couples choose one “WOW” outfit and a second outfit you'd feel amazing wearing out on a date!

Tip # 6: Make sure you’re comfortable

If you’re not comfortable in what you’re wearing, you’ll probably think you look uncomfortable in your photos. Make sure to choose outfits that make you feel like a rockstar.

Tip # 7 for what to wear: Be yourselves!

We could tell you exactly what to wear from head to toe, but we want you to look and feel like YOU during your session. Think about the things you wear often or your go to pieces of clothing and start there. Remember that we want your engagement photos to be true to you!
