Forest Engagement Photos in McCall, Idaho

Enchanting engagement photos in the trees + tips for planning your own forest engagement photos

When you’re a McCall regular, you know that the lake isn’t all it has to offer. The mountains of Idaho are diverse and beautiful in so many ways. When I heard Molly and Richard’s story, we knew the forest is where we’d end up for their engagement photos in McCall.

We had the perfect evening in early fall, with sun streaming through the trees, glowing warm on our skin. Molly and Richard were in Idaho for work before escaping to the mountains for a few days, an annual tradition they’d been doing together for a few years. With no agenda, they unplug and get away together each year, spending a few days in the bliss of solitude plus each other’s company. When Molly told me about her experiences over the years in the mountains in Idaho, I knew she got it—this hidden gem, enchanting quality you find in pockets all over our beautiful state.

So when they met me in McCall for their engagement photos, we steered clear of the lake, because the forest was where they found peace and connection. We spent a few hours together as the sun went down, and had so much fun wandering and laughing together.

Tips for Forest Engagement Photos in McCall

If you’re planning your own engagement photos in the forests of McCall or Idaho in general, here are some tips that will help you prepare!

Wear close toed shoes

It’s much easier to walk around in close toed shoes. With uneven terrain and all kinds of things that may get stuck in sandals (pokey plants, fire ants), I always recommend wearing close toed shoes for forest engagement photos in Idaho.

Go a little early for the best light

When you’re taking photos in the trees, you often lose the light a little earlier than the scheduled sunset time. Start a little earlier to get light coming through the trees on a sunny day.

Bring insect repellent along to your session

Depending on the time of year, you may want insect repellent for forest engagement photos in the mountains. If the bugs are bad, you’ll be miserable without it!

Eat early during the warm weather months

A lot of Idaho’s mountain towns close earlier than bigger cities, so if you’re planning to grab something to eat in a nearby town, consider eating before your session or packing a picnic dinner if your session will end later in the evening.

Check road conditions and the fire map in the days leading up to your forest photo session

During the warmer months, forest fires can be common in Idaho. Check local fire maps to make sure your location will be accessible.

Bring a jacket to your forest photography session

As the sun goes down in the mountains, it can get chilly. Bring a jacket or warmer outer layer to wear in some photos or just to keep yourself warm as the temperature drops.

Photographing couples is such a personal job and it’s honestly the best. I’m Becky, a photographer based in Boise, Idaho where I live with my favorite guy and our son. Being invited into the most personal celebrations and intimate stories is one of my greatest privileges as a photographer. Beyond amazing locations and beautiful details, I love photography because of the people. Camera in hand, I simultaneously get to know people and give them the gift of seeing a deeper part of themselves and the people they love. I believe in photographs that are evocative, nuanced, and personal, and I’d love to create some for you.
