As a photographer in Boise, Sun Valley, and beyond, I’ve seen my fair share of wedding photos! When it comes to your wedding day, few things last beyond the day itself. Two things you’ll always have are the memories of your wedding day and the photos that captured them. As a wedding photographer, it’s my job to take beautiful photos that capture the beginning of your journey as a couple, that show your relationship and help you remember exactly how the moments on your wedding day looked and felt.
If you want amazing wedding photos, here are my top tips for getting them!
As a wedding photographer in Boise, I know first hand how important it is to form a personal relationship with my couples. When Kaleb and I have taken the time to learn more about our couples and when couples trust us with their story, we are always able to better capture photos that feel true to them.
In our process as Boise wedding photographers, we take time to get to know couples during a video call and at their engagement photo session before the wedding. Doing an engagement session with your wedding photographer allows you to experience what it’s like being in front of their camera with your spouse-to-be!
At minimum, talk with your wedding photographer about your relationship. The more we as photographers know about your story and relationship, the more we’re able to capture personal moments between you on your wedding day. When we have context for how you met, what you love about each other, what your relationship looks like on a day to day basis, how you love and interact with your family and friends, etc., we’re able to observe and photograph the small moments we might otherwise miss.
During some moments on your wedding day, we as photographers may step in to help you and the people around you look their best in photos. However, there are many moments when we prefer to capture things as they happen naturally. It’s common for couples or their families and friends to ask the photographer in the room, “Where should we stand?” or “Should we look at you?” or say things like, “Ohhh, don’t cry!” As wedding photographers, we will say something if and when we need something, but otherwise, we want real moments to unfold before us. We recommend preparing your family and wedding party by introducing them to your wedding photographer when they arrive on the wedding day (don’t worry, we always do this ourselves when we arrive!), and explaining to the people around you that they don’t need to adjust because of the camera in the room.
We want you and your family and friends to be yourselves in front of the camera—acting like you would without a photographer in the room. As wedding photographers, it is an honor to be invited into some of the most personal, intimate moments on a wedding day, and we don’t take that lightly. Let your family and friends know that you trust your photographer with your story, and want your photos to reflect real feelings, real moments, and the real joy of your wedding day.
As wedding photographers in Boise, we study light and constantly assess locations on a wedding day. Your wedding day locations can make the look of your wedding photos. Ask your photographer ahead of time to weigh in on what characteristics are needed for them to capture beautiful photos on your wedding day. As you choose locations to get ready, take photos, have your ceremony, etc., talk to your planner and photographer.
When you’re finally together on your wedding day, the best way to get amazing wedding photos is to focus on each other. When you let yourself interact with your partner the way you do naturally, the way you feel about each other will organically shine through in your wedding photos. Don’t be afraid to be passionate together, show affection, and laugh like you would if you were alone together on a date. The more you’re able to relax with one another, the more your wedding photos will feel true to you.
With all the weddings I’ve photographed as a photographer in Boise, Sun Valley, Chicago and beyond, I know that following these four tips will help you get amazing wedding photos! If you’re looking for a wedding photographer in Boise or the surrounding area (we do travel), we would love to connect!
Wedding photography is my heartbeat. For me, it holds the perfect tension between creativity and authenticity, observation and connection. In front of my camera clients transform to friends, and behind it you'll usually find me tearing up, cheering you on, or holding my breath because of the raw goodness of the moment at hand.
