As we drove down the unpaved road towards yet another wedding reception location, my mom turned around and asked us, “What are your wedding colors going to be?” With eyes wide with realization that we had no idea, Becky and I nervously laughed about yet ANOTHER decision that we had to make for our wedding. Of course, the nervous laughs ended and we had to start thinking.
As I looked down to ponder, I saw my favorite blue Chino pants, across which lay Becky’s favorite grey shoes and trusty yellow-leather purse, lined in a light tan trim. It was a stroke of genius. I looked up, and said to my to-be-wife, “what about these colors?” She knew they were the ones. We both did.
Choosing the colors of your wedding is tough. I’m a designer and its tough for me! It’s difficult to figure out what colors work well together, which ones you like together the most, which ones will be in fashion or season when your wedding comes around, and which ones will look awesome in photos. Well, here are a couple of suggestions we have for choosing your wedding colors:
For Becky and I, it happened to be what we were wearing. For another couple we photographed, it was a blue delft plate. If you have something you love the look of, the feel of, and the emotion of, then use it as a basis for your wedding colors!
One of my favorite wedding brands based their wedding colors off of a tie. It was awesome! Maybe you have a dress that you like, or an outfit that makes you feel like a boss. Whatever it is, it makes you feel good wearing it, so use that item of clothing to choose your wedding colors!
Complimentary colors are like color schemes 101, you can’t go wrong choosing these! For our wedding, we chose navy and yellow. You could choose a pink and blue, or rose and green, or even an orange and purple! There are tons of variations.
Contrast is beautiful. When choosing your wedding colors, pick a light color and a dark color! This works especially well if you choose a light neutral like grey or beige and have a dark pop of color like blue, red or purple. One of the best ways to add simple contrast is by having the groomsmen wear a darker neutral, like black or navy, and the bridesmaids wear a lighter color.
Here are some examples we LOVE with neutral suits that add contrast:
All things considered, make sure your wedding colors are you! Becky and I chose our wedding colors because they were our favorites and they happened to go together well. We would have never chosen a bright purple and green wedding, it’s not us! So when choosing your wedding colors, above all else, you need to be comfortable in them. Keep that in mind and you’ll feel awesome about your wedding!
