What's the value of a second shooter for Studio Ostendo? AND what does Kaleb do?
Kaleb and I photograph each Studio Ostendo wedding day together. We 100% value having two shooters on wedding days and here’s why: having a second shooter present at your wedding means that two pairs of eyes and two artists capture your special day. Plus, we work best as a team!
So Kaleb is my second shooter on wedding days, but...
He allows us to be in two places at once in the earlier parts of the wedding day! He often photographs the guys getting ready if the location is within 10-15 minutes of the bride’s getting ready location.
He captures different angles and moments than I do. Because my first priority is to capture the important shots that tell the story of our couple’s day, his first priority is to be creative. I give direction to couples and their loved ones while I photograph, meanwhile Kaleb floats around unnoticed, capturing many more candid moments. Because we believe our personalities are very different, but complement each other well, we capture different moments but also choose to focus on different things during the same moments. Kaleb provides a different perspective. We think differently and relate differently! Here are some of Kaleb’s strengths on our team: his calming presence to the groom, his ability to capture close up details, and his eye for capturing glances and emotions between our clients.
Kaleb supports me, taking care of all the behind-the-scenes tasks that help us move through a session or wedding day smoothly! We joke that he's a photographer first, but our "equipment manager" second. A lot of the time, he holds the bouquet, ties ties, grabs a different lens for me, holds a reflector, checks things off our family shot list, etc. He makes the shots happen! He’s the one who makes sure we get the shot requested of the bride with her childhood best friend who is only coming to the reception. While he shoots most of the time, he graciously steps in when necessary to take care of the little details that make things run smoothly.
Wedding photography is my heartbeat. For me, it holds the perfect tension between creativity and authenticity, observation and connection. In front of my camera clients transform to friends, and behind it you'll usually find me tearing up, cheering you on, or holding my breath because of the raw goodness of the moment at hand.
