Family Photos in the Boise Foothills

Sunny photos of a family in foothills

While I love photographing families at home, when you live in Boise there’s almost no more iconic spot for family photos than in the foothills. I did a two-part photo session for this fun family, with one part taking place at home and I’m excited to share the other part here: their family photos in Boise.

Outdoor Family Photos in Boise

Taking family photos with young kiddos is always an adventure. As a former preschool teacher, it’s right up my alley. Most things don’t go as planned and that’s the fun in it—the unpredictable, imperfect moments that end up being a window into real life.

I met this fun family in the Boise foothills for their family photos and we had nothing but laughs walking down paths, the girls picking sunflowers before we could stop them and running ahead to explore. It was a sunny morning at the end of fall, the perfect time to be in the foothills.

We walked and talked. I snapped some photos of the kiddos and played some games. We weren’t going for quantity but a few photos of what it feels like to belong in this family and I love how they turned out.

Tips for Taking Family Photos in Boise

If you’re taking your own family photos in the foothills, here are some tips to make the most of your photo session:

Plan for the light you want

Most areas in the Boise foothills are pretty exposed, so light matters. If you’re wanting glowy light, plan your session around sunrise or sunset. For direct sun, consider a mid-day photo session. For this family, we worked around naptimes and aimed for a sunny time of day to make sure the kiddos weren’t too cold in the crisp fall air.

Check the Ridge to Rivers map before selecting your location

If you’re planning to take family photos along a hiking trail in Boise, check the Ridge to Rivers trail map to make sure you have all the information about the trail you’re planning to use. Sometimes trails are closed for mud, wildfires, or restoration work. Some trails are accessible in certain directions on odd or even days of the month.

Dress for the wind and movement

The foothills can get breezy and depending on the location they may not have a lot of cover from the wind. Dress in layers or bring an extra warm layer or blanket.

If you’re looking for family photos in Boise, reach out to inquire!

I’m Becky, a lifestyle and family photographer in Idaho where I live with my husband and son. Each time I pick up my mom’s old film camera to snap a photo of my boys or grab a phone photo of a mundane moment with my son makes me a better photographer for my clients. As an artist I’m not only creating my favorite work with clients. Day in and day out, I’m capturing the things in my own life worth remembering—the stories I’ll be retelling for years—and I’d love to do that for you.

Becky Dean, family photographer in Boise

I love photographing families and the life they are building together. While I love creating beautiful photographs that catalog another year gone by for families, I’m obsessed with capturing raw interactions and families as they truly are. What I hope for my lifestyle and family sessions is that they become a time for families to connect with their loved ones in a way that’s meaningful to them.
