Idaho Botanical Garden Engagement Photos

Surprise garden proposal and engagement photos in Idaho

When Garrett reached out to me about Idaho Botanical Garden photos, I knew they would be stunning! He was planning a surprise proposal and we got to work planning the details to pull it off.

Idaho Botanical Garden: a stunning location for photos in Boise

Nestled against the foothills in Boise, the Idaho Botanical Garden features seven main gardens. On land that was once the Idaho Penitentiary, the gardens feature a variety of plants as well as collections of art and beautiful water features. While Idaho Botanical Garden does require a photo permit for professional photos, it is well worth it! With beautiful pathways surrounded by flowers and foliage, it’s a unique and stunning location for family or engagement photos in Boise.

Garrett and Ashley’s surprise proposal and engagement photos at Idaho Botanical Garden

Garrett and Ashley got engaged at the Idaho Botanical Garden and I was there to capture photos of their engagement! As I was chatting with Garrett and Ashley afterward, I asked Garrett how he pulled off the surprise. It turns out that Garrett has been preparing for this proposal for months. A few months ago he started planning a surprise date day each month. He would tell Ashley when the date was, tell her what to wear and when to be ready, and they’d go on a surprise date! So when it came time for their proposal date, it was no different to Ashley than a regular surprise date day! Garrett asked Ashley to wear a dress he had gotten for her earlier in their relationship and picked her up that morning. They showed up at the Idaho Botanical Garden, casually strolling through the English garden before making their way to the spot where Garrett planned to propose. They stopped under the arbor and while Ashley was looking at the vines growing up the arbor, Garrett got down on one knee behind her. She turned around and realized he was asking her to marry him. She said yes, Garrett slid the ring on Ashley’s finger, and they shared an intimate moment together.

After a while we took some engagement photos of Garrett and Ashley around Idaho Botanical Garden. A few minutes into photos, Ashley started tearing up—the surprise and emotion taking over as the feeling of being engaged started to sink in.

Congrats to Garrett and Ashley! It was so fun being in on the surprise and capturing photographs to help them remember their engagement!

Planning your own photos at Idaho Botanical Garden

If you’re planning your own engagement photos or family photos at Idaho Botanical Garden, here are some tips to consider:

  • First, make sure your photographer has a photography membership to the gardens and/or secures a permit with Idaho Botanical Garden. Permits there run between $110 and $220, and typically clients do pay to cover the photography permit.
  • When planning a photoshoot at Idaho Botanical Garden, check their calendar and call to make an appointment. Photoshoots happen during their open hours, so check all those details when scheduling your session.
  • Consider the time of year. The gardens look different during each season. During late spring and into summer the gardens are in bloom. Later in the fall the trees start changing but flowers aren’t as vibrant and may not be in bloom. As the weather turns colder, the trees will lose their leaves and the gardens may have decorative elements added for seasonal events (i.e. scarecrow walk or lights display).
  • If you’re considering having an outdoor wedding at Idaho Botanical Garden, you can reach out via their website.
