It’s a question I always ask, because proposals tell so much about the story and relationship of each couple–who they are, what they value, how they give and receive love. I realized in the early stages of our wedding photography business how special it is to re-live those moments and memories, and how sweet it is to share them with others. But I’m a strong believer that just telling your story isn’t enough.
We ask ALL our couples to sit down together and write out their proposal story.
Memory Failure | Maybe it’s just me, but there are some days when I can hardly remember what I had for breakfast. As we move deeper into married life, it becomes easy to forget the details.
I encourage couples to include details about the 5 senses in their written descriptions. There seems to be a strong connection among your memories and what you were hearing, seeing, smelling, tasting, and touching in those moments. (We use this tip on wedding days too…click HERE and HERE to read how.) Including these details makes your written story flood your memories and emotions when you reread it.
The story of your engagement is a testimony of where your journey formally started. It’s something your kids and grandkids will VALUE reading and reliving with you some day. Like I said before, proposals tell so much about who you are, what you value, and how you love. How sweet to be able to share that with the family who will be influenced and raised under your love and care!
And my last selfish reason: I BALL MY EYES OUT WHEN I READ THEM.
Ask Kaleb, I can’t help it…my eyes well up with tears every time…because those stories are so beautifully full of the kind of affection, affirmation, and dedication we all love and long for.
So take the time…write it down. I promise you’ll be calling me in 25 years telling me how thankful you are that you did.
Wedding photography is my heartbeat. For me, it holds the perfect tension between creativity and authenticity, observation and connection. In front of my camera clients transform to friends, and behind it you'll usually find me tearing up, cheering you on, or holding my breath because of the raw goodness of the moment at hand.
