The Getting Ready Room: 6 Do’s & 1 Don’t

The getting ready room hosts the first moments of your wedding day, and in order to make those moments filled with joy and laughter instead of problems and stress, we’re sharing 6 Do’s and 1 Don’t for the getting ready room!

The getting ready room is one of my favorite parts of any wedding day. I remember how much fun it was to have my girls surrounding me on my own wedding day as we all got ready… laughing, dancing, talking, and “oooing and ahhing” as each girl had her hair and makeup finished!

The Getting Ready Room: 6 Do’s & 1 Don’t!

Do’s:

1. Keep it Clean

Designate a corner or safe space for bridesmaids/groomsmen to leave their bags, purses, and anything else they aren’t actively using. Your pictures will look much more elegant without the clutter!

2. Provide food/drinks

Everyone knows a party is better with food! Those who are gathering to get ready for your wedding day need to be fueled and ready to go, so make sure to provide some snacks!  We always recommend including healthy options as well—it’ll be a long, fun filled day and your body will need lots energy and hydration.

3. Music

Loosen up!  It’s normal to be a little jittery on your wedding day. Set the mood and have a little fun by playing your favorite music as you prep for one of the sweetest days of your life!

4. Hang your dress or suit & let it breathe!

Make sure your getting ready room has a spot to hang dresses & suits!  It’s important to keep them looking fresh and to let them breathe a little instead of keeping them in a bag or cover all morning.

5. Temperature control availability

Getting ready rooms often get SUPER warm, especially if bridesmaids are getting their hair done in the getting ready room OR if groomsmen are doing some last minute ironing!  Having the ability to control the room temperature can make your getting ready time way more comfortable & enjoyable!

6. Have emergency kit items available

We all have those friends who forget something. Help the day run a little smoother by having emergency kit items available to those getting ready with you!  We recommend delegating this task to your maid of honor or personal attendant.

Don’t forget to wear something comfortable & cute until you slip into your wedding attire! Instead of having people show up in their pajamas or lazy-day sweats, talk to your wedding party about what to wear!  It doesn’t have to get too complicated, but it’ll make a huge difference in your getting ready photos!

I'm a Co-founder and Lead Photographer at Studio Ostendo.

Wedding photography is my heartbeat. For me, it holds the perfect tension between creativity and authenticity, observation and connection. In front of my camera clients transform to friends, and behind it you'll usually find me tearing up, cheering you on, or holding my breath because of the raw goodness of the moment at hand.
