While we hope for perfect temperatures and clear skies on every wedding day, we don’t always get it. The truth is, rain can be a reality on your wedding day. Just in case, we compiled our top tips for how to be prepared and make the most of your rainy wedding day!
Depending on the season of your wedding and climate of your wedding location, create a rain plan that works for you, your wedding party, your guests, and your venue. Make sure to have a Plan B if your wedding is scheduled to be outdoors!
We’ve been a part of some wedding situations where the weather could change instantly, or the forecast was unclear. Don’t be afraid to make the call to stick with Plan A or go with Plan B when necessary. Someone needs to make the call, and as the bride, it should probably be YOU!
I was a bridesmaid at a wedding once where the weather was ominous. The venue wanted so badly to move forward with Plan B, but the bride, made the call to move forward with Plan A and have the wedding outside (a simplified version with chairs only for grandparents and a shortened ceremony). She was confident in her decision, okay with whatever would happen, and ultimately ended up loving her outdoor wedding. AND if it had started raining, she was okay with having a good story and finishing the wedding indoors.
Consider ahead of time what you are and are not willing to do if it rains on your wedding day. For example, some brides are totally comfortable getting the bottom of their dresses a little wet and dirty to get the pictures they want even if it’s raining…others are not. Be yourself, do what you’re comfortable with, and make sure to talk with your vendors about your personal boundaries honestly.
If there’s rain in the forecast for your wedding day, buy matching umbrellas for your wedding party! We recommend buying clear umbrellas (or white if necessary), because black umbrellas cast dark shadows while colored umbrellas can cast colors on faces during photos. We also bring a few clear umbrellas with us on every wedding day!
When it comes down to it, you can’t change the weather on your wedding day. Make the best of it and enjoy the day. Stressing about it will only make your wedding day less joyful!
Wedding photography is my heartbeat. For me, it holds the perfect tension between creativity and authenticity, observation and connection. In front of my camera clients transform to friends, and behind it you'll usually find me tearing up, cheering you on, or holding my breath because of the raw goodness of the moment at hand.
